English Language Arts
In eighth grade Language Arts, students work carefully to discern the author’s perspective and the particular facts and details that support it. The student reads thoughtfully and purposefully, constantly checking for understanding of the author’s intent and meaning so that the interpretation will be sound.
Additionally, the student writes clear, coherent text that develops a central idea or tells a story. The writing shows consideration of the audience and purpose. The student progresses through the stages of the writing process. The student demonstrates an understanding of listening, speaking, and viewing skills for a variety of purposes.
The student listens critically and responds appropriately to oral communication in a variety of genres and media. The student speaks in a manner that guides the listener to understand important ideas.
Students are expected to read 25 Books through independent reading and in class assignments by the end of the year.

By the end of grade eight, students will understand various numerical representations, including square roots, exponents and scientific notation; use and apply geometric properties of plane figures, including congruence and the Pythagorean theorem; and use symbolic algebra to represent situations and solve problems, especially those that involve linear relationships.
The students will also solve linear equations, systems of linear equations and inequalities; use equations, tables and graphs to analyze and interpret linear functions; use and understand set theory and simple counting techniques; determine the theoretical probability of simple events; and make inferences from statistical data, particularly data that can be modeled by linear functions.
The eighth grade middle school physical science course is designed to give students the necessary skills for a smooth transition from elementary physical science standards to high school physical science standards. The purpose is to give all students an overview of common strands in physical science including, but not limited to, the nature of matter, laws of energy, matter, motion and forces, and energy transformation.
Mathematics
At the end of the eighth grade year, the Criterion Referenced Competency Test (CRCT) will test individual students’ knowledge on each of these skills. In order to be promoted to the ninth grade, it is a state requirement for the student to pass the CRCT in mathematics and reading with an 800 or above.
Throughout the year there are various support services offered at differing times. A few of these include Saturday School, zero period, intensives/boot camp, and early morning tutoring sessions. However, it is up to your child to study and prepare for each of these topics throughout the year. We look forward to an exciting year of learning math and preparing your child for Math 1.

Science
Students will work conceptually on the laws of physical science: Conservation of matter, conservation of energy, motion and forces, and energy transformation. They will use what they observe to explain the difference between physical and chemical changes. Eighth graders will write instructions, describe observations, and show information in graphical form.
When analyzing the data they collect, eighth graders will be able to recognize relationships in simple charts and graphs and find more than one way to interpret their findings. Social Studies
In Georgia Studies, 8th grade students take an introspective glance into the state of Georgia. Students learn about Georgia’s geographic variety and the advantages that its geography offers through tourism and trade. Students delve into Georgia’s history, which covers topics ranging from the foundation of the colony Georgia up to the 1996 Olympic Games.
Students focus on economic standards, which entail Georgia’s economic contributions, Georgia’s economy throughout history, and personal finance. Georgia’s Government, which includes Georgia’s constitutions and its three branches of government, is also a key element of the Georgia Studies course.
