English Language Arts
As readers, sixth graders begin to experience more sophisticated pieces of literature for study and analysis, which leads them to choose more complex literature to read for enjoyment. Middle school students do more reading for learning than learning to read.
Students will be asked to read from a variety of genres to increase reading comprehension, vocabulary knowledge, discern author’s purpose, and infer meaning. Students in sixth grade math have the opportunity to learn many new concepts through real world engaging opportunities.
Using everything from music to hands on experiences, students work together to solve real world problems through engaging tasks. The middle school earth science course is designed to give all students an overview of common strands in earth science including, but not limited to, meteorology, geology, astronomy, oceanography, resources, and human impact on the earth.
Sixth grade students study Latin America, Canada, Europe, and Australia in this first year of a two year World Area Studies course. The goal of this two year course is to acquaint middle school students with the world in which they live.
The course will focus on geography, government, economics, and history. The geography domain includes both physical and human geography. The intent of the geography domain is for students to begin to grasp the importance geography plays in their everyday lives.
The government/civics domain focuses on selected types of government found in the various areas so as to help students begin to understand the variety of governments in the world. The economics domain builds on the K-5 economics; however, the focus shifts from the United States to how other countries answer the basic questions of economics. The history domain focuses on major events in each region during the twentieth and twenty-first centuries.
Students are expected to read 25 Books through independent reading and in class assignments by the end of the year.
As writers, students analyze and edit their own writing to include acceptable use of basic conventions; and they also continue to develop their individual voices and styles.
Throughout sixth grade, students develop the ability to critique constructively their own and others’ work. Because the degree to which a student observes writing conventions is often proportionate to that individual’s reading prowess, a natural increase in writing, editing, and proofreading skills results. The sixth grade students will cover all operations with fractions and decimals, finding the greatest common factor and least common multiple of a set of numbers, and the distributive property in the first unit on fluency in the number system. Students will then move onto developing proportional reasoning through studying rates, ratios, and fractions.
From there, the students will have the opportunity to discover the foundations of algebra through expressions, equations, and inequalities. Students will spend time understanding the formulas for area, surface area, and volume. They will begin a journey through basic statistics and data analysis, and then end the year focusing on integers.CCGPS-Gr6-8-Math-Standards
Students will actively use inquiry methods to investigate the earth system. Sixth grade students will use records they keep and analyze the data they collect. They will use different models to represent systems such as the solar system and the sun/moon/earth system.
They use what they observe about the earth’s materials to infer the processes and timelines that formed them. Sixth graders will write instructions, describe observations, and show information in graphical form.
