The student reads thoughtfully and purposefully, constantly checking for understanding of the author\u2019s intent and meaning so that the interpretation will be sound.<\/p>\n<p>Additionally, the student writes clear, coherent text that develops a central idea or tells a story. The writing shows consideration of the audience and purpose. The student progresses through the stages of the writing process. The student demonstrates an understanding of listening, speaking, and viewing skills for a variety of purposes.<\/p>\n<p>The student listens critically and responds appropriately to oral communication in a variety of genres and media. The student speaks in a manner that guides the listener to understand important ideas.<\/p>\n<p>Students are expected to read 25 Books through independent reading and in class assignments by the end of the year.<br \/>\nThe following link will provide more detailed information regarding the 8th Grade Reading and Language Arts curriculum:<br \/>\nBy the end of grade eight, students will understand various numerical representations, including square roots, exponents and scientific notation; use and apply geometric properties of plane figures, including congruence and the Pythagorean theorem; and use symbolic algebra to represent situations and solve problems, especially those that involve linear relationships.<\/p>\n<p>The students will also solve linear equations, systems of linear equations and inequalities; use equations, tables and graphs to analyze and interpret linear functions; use and understand set theory and simple counting techniques; determine the theoretical probability of simple events; and make inferences from statistical data, particularly data that can be modeled by linear functions.<\/p>\n<p>The eighth grade middle school physical science course is designed to give students the necessary skills for a smooth transition from elementary physical science standards to high school physical science standards. The purpose is to give all students an overview of common strands in physical science including, but not limited to, the nature of matter, laws of energy, matter, motion and forces, and energy with an 800 or above.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Throughout the year there are various support services offered at differing times.\u00a0 A few of these include Saturday School, zero period,
